How it works

Current depends on power, voltage and the type of circuit. For DC, divide watts by volts. For AC, also divide by the power factor, and for three-phase systems additionally by √3. Use a power factor of 1 for purely resistive loads such as heaters and kettles.

Formula

DC: I = P / V
AC 1~: I = P / (V × PF)
AC 3~: I = P / (√3 × V × PF)

Worked examples

  • Power (W): 2000 · Voltage (V): 230 · Circuit type: AC single-phase · Power factor (cos φ): 1 → Current: 8.6957 A
  • Power (W): 11000 · Voltage (V): 400 · Circuit type: AC three-phase · Power factor (cos φ): 0.9 → Current: 17.6413 A
  • Power (W): 60 · Voltage (V): 12 · Circuit type: DC → Current: 5 A

Frequently asked questions

How many amps is 2000 watts at 230 V?

For a resistive load, 2000 W ÷ 230 V = 8.7 A, which a standard 10 A or 16 A circuit can handle.

Why do I need the power factor?

In AC circuits with motors, transformers or electronics, current and voltage are out of phase, so more current flows than P ÷ V suggests. Divide additionally by the power factor (often 0.8–0.95).
